    The ASTRI project

ASTRI, Astrofisica con Specchi a Tecnologia Replicante Italiana, is a special project (Progetto Bandiera) of the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research related to the CTA International Observatory, next generation of the IACT, Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes.
In this context, INAF (Italian National Institute of Astrophysics) is currently developing a scientific and technological breakthrough to allow the study of the uppermost limit of the Very High Energy gamma-ray domain (a few TeV - hundreds of TeV).

The ASTRI project includes the full development, installation and calibration of a Small Size class Telescope prototype compliant with the requirements of the CTA High Energy array. Among the number of technological challenges, this telescope, also named ASTRI SST-2M, will be the very first instrument implementing both the Schwarzschild-Couder optical configuration and the Silicon Photomulitplier (SiPM) light sensors for air Cherenkov imaging.

On 2014 September 24th, at the M.G. Fracastoro Observing Station of the INAF-Catania Astrophysical Observatory at Serra La Nave on mount Etna, Italy, we held the inauguration of the ASTRI SST-2M. It represents a prototype of the 70 Small Size Telescopes to be installed at the CTA Southern site.
